This Week in Local Government: Conyers Planning Commission and Rockdale County Data Center Town Hall — Both Tuesday Night at 6 p.m.

Published on May 11, 2026 at 3:07 PM

Two public meetings are on the calendar in Conyers this week, and residents who want to attend both face a scheduling problem: they're at the same time, in different buildings, on opposite ends of downtown.

Here's what I know.

Conyers Planning Commission Meeting

  • Date: Tuesday, May 12, 2026
  • Time: 6:00 p.m.
  • Location: Council Chambers, Conyers City Hall, 901 O'Kelly Street, Conyers, GA 30012
  • Livestream: conyersga.com
  • Contact: 770-929-4280

The Conyers Planning Commission meets the second Tuesday of each month. The commission reviews zoning, land use, and development matters within the city limits and makes recommendations to the City Council. The agenda may be subject to cancellation if there are no items to consider, so I recommend checking the city's calendar at conyersga.com before heading over.

Rockdale County Board of Commissioners Town Hall — Topic: Data Centers

  • Date: Tuesday, May 12, 2026
  • Time: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Location: Rockdale Auditorium, 903 Main Street, Conyers, GA 30012
  • Livestream: Rockdale County Government Facebook page and rockdalecountyga.gov

Chair JaNice VanNess and Commissioner Tuwanya Smith are convening this town hall specifically to discuss data centers — a topic that has dominated Rockdale County's zoning and land use conversation for months. The county announced the meeting on April 30. Residents are invited to ask questions, raise concerns, and hear updates directly from the board.

Scheduling note

Because the Conyers Planning Commission and the Rockdale County town hall start at the same time on the same night, anyone wanting to follow both will need to pick one in person and watch the other on livestream. The two venues are roughly two blocks apart in downtown Conyers, but the meetings will run concurrently.

What I'm watching

  • Whether the BOC offers any update on the proposed Unified Development Ordinance (Case TEXT2026-03) and the 1,000-foot residential buffer for data centers
  • Whether commissioners address the two MMM Acquisitions data center applications continued to July 2026
  • Whether any update is provided on the DC BLOX data center campus already under construction
  • Whether resident comments mirror the concerns raised at the March 27 zoning meeting
